The Cork Sports Partnership, Volleyball Ireland and the CEV teamed up to launch a Schools project in Cork. Yesterday saw over 100 children from six different schools descend on the FR Matthews Sports Centre for a day of Volleyball action.

The initiative began eight weeks ago with a Teacher training workshop delivered by Volleyball Ireland. Teachers then took Volleyball back to their schools for eight weeks of preparation and practice before the big blitz yesterday.

The CEV have provided Volleyball Ireland with 500 balls and 50 nets to inspire new schools into the sport.

The programme will see teachers provided with online resources and session plans that will help develop both technical Volleyball skills and fundamental physical literacy skills for the participants.

Commenting on the programme, General Manager of Volleyball Ireland, Gary Stewart said, “The CEV are providing the equipment, Volleyball Ireland provides the training and Cork Sports provide the schools so it is a really good partnership approach. It is fantastic to see the programme taking off in Cork. There is nothing better than seeing children with smiley faces playing Volleyball.”

Participating in the event was Upper Glenmire School, and teacher Sean Scanlon added, “The CEV programme has been superb. The training provided by Conor from Volleyball Ireland was perfect. The children have loved the sport and we can see their key fundamental skills improving so much. Equipment is a big barrier and having access to balls makes a high difference. We are looking forward to competing in the national competition now.”

The project moves into post primary schools in the New Year, with 16 schools across Cork signed up.

As well as working in Cork City, the programme targets strategic areas in Galway, North Dublin and West Dublin, as well as schools near beaches to take up the outdoor version of the sport.
