Iceland‘s Volleyball Cup finals took place last weekend. The three-day event included a spectacular show for the high-level competitions in Iceland in line with the Icelandic Volleyball´s Federation‘s vision to market and sell the event and to ensure that there is a high-level platform for the teams, spectators and TV for a live broadcast on national television. It is the moment of truth when the Cup weekend takes place in Iceland and according to the BLI spokesman the weekend was deemed successful both in terms of high-level volleyball matches where the finals on the women‘s side ended in a five-set thriller, where KA from Akureyri claimed the 2022 Cup Championships after beating their rivals in Afturelding from Mosfellbaer, currently the 2 best teams on the women side. Individual sets KA vs Afturelding: 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 15-11).
On the men´s side, it was the Hamar from Hveragerdi, the flower boys, nicknamed from the town‘s greenhouses, that took on KA from Akureyri. It was a straight 3-0 win from Hamar which won both the Championship and Cup in 2021. The team has been the strongest in Iceland in the last 2 years after the return of the Valdimarsson brothers who have been leading the team forward with the first titles in the club‘s history last year. Individual sets Hamar vs KA Akureyri: 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-23).
The Cup weekend showed that volleyball‘s main stronghold is coming from outside of the Reykjavik capital as teams that entered the semifinals were from Neskaupstadur, Akureyri, Kopavogur, Mosfellsbaer and Hveragerdi.
