The ninth edition of the ‘Memorial Alessandro Casadei’, the tournament named after the former setter and captain of the Sammarinese national team who passed away in 2009 following a car accident, took place on December 19 and 20 in Serravalle. The event featured three teams from the Italian B league and the men’s national team of San Marino. The hosts eventually settled for the second place after losing the final to the team of Forlì 0-3 (20-25, 24-26, 19-25).
“We played two good matches,” said San Marino coach Stefano Mascetti. “Forlì are one of the top teams in the Serie B and it is quite normal that they beat us – even though they did not thrash us. We played a good match in the semis as well and I am happy with the way the team performed. All players on the roster could get some on-court time and I am especially pleased with this because they need to get experience and improve their game. I also liked the attitude shown by the team throughout the tournament.”
