Iceland triumph with gold at women’s SCD Finals in Luxembourg

213340_DSC_0048It has been a busy time for the Small Countries Division (SCD) lately, especially since the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) took place only a few weeks ago in San Marino. Their season finished on Sunday with the last matches scheduled for the finals of the 2017 SCD women’s European Championship at d’Coque in Luxembourg, where Iceland claimed the gold medal, with hosts Luxembourg and Cyprus settling for silver and bronze, respectively.

It was an exciting tournament at d’Coque with all teams playing four matches in three days – a hectic and challenging programme indeed – with Iceland and Luxembourg sharing the same record in the end, with three wins and one loss, but the Icelandic ladies edged the ‘Red Lion Ladies’ by virtue of their better Match Sets Quotient. Iceland beat Luxembourg 3-0 on Saturday night (25-13, 28-26, 25-19) to ‘justify’ their first position on the final standing with their only setback in the tournament resulting from their opening match, which they lost 1-3 to Scotland.

Iceland’s Jona Vigfusdottir top scored in the competition with 60 points, two more than home star Betty Hoffmann and three more than the most prolific player of the Cyprus team, Andrea Charalambous.

The final standing of the SCD Finals reverse what happened only a few weeks ago at the GSSE in San Marino where Cyprus won gold, the hosts took silver and Luxembourg settled for the bronze medal, with Iceland having to be content with fourth place.
