In order to create media awareness, the four semi-finals of the men’s and women’s Faroese national cup were played at the same venue in the capital Tórshavn on Saturday in a marathon event lasting for eight and a half hours.
The women of Fleyr Tórshavn secured their place in the cup final in a nail-biting five-setter where they survived four match-balls against KÍF Kollafjørður in the fourth set, before they went on to clinch the tiebreaker 15-7. Fleyr, once a powerhouse in Faroese Volleyball, have never won the national cup competition since its inception back in 2000, and have been in only one final which they lost to SÍ Sørvágur in 2009.
However, Fleyr will get their chance for revenge this time as it’s exactly SÍ they will face in the final again, as SÍ earlier on the day had overcome last year’s runners-up TB Tvøroyri to qualify for the final. It was TB who made the brighter start, winning the opening set 25-19. SÍ went full throttle thereafter though, winning the next three sets comfortably.
Women’s semi-final results:
TB Tvøroyri vs SÍ Sørvágur 1:3 (25-19, 19-25, 18-25, 19-25)
KÍF Kollafjørður vs Fleyr Tórshavn 2:3 (18-25, 25-21, 25-17, 24-26, 7-15)For the fourth time in a row it will be ÍF Fuglafjørður and SÍ Sørvágur who will meet in the men’s final. ÍF booked their place in the final with a victory over newcomers Ternan Toftir, who gave stiff opposition, although losing in straight sets against the experienced ÍF team.
SÍ’s semi-final against Fleyr had been predicted as a tricky match for the defending cup winners, but in emphatic style SÍ made short shrift and romped to a 3-0 win, sending a clear message to ÍF that they don’t have any intention of relinquishing the trophy they won last year.
Men’s semi-final results:
SÍ Sørvágur vs Fleyr Tórshavn 3:0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-15)
ÍF Fuglafjørður vs Ternan Toftir 3:0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-21)The Faroese cup finals will be played in Tórshavn on February 20.
